PSA is a protein level measured in blood. It can rise because of cancer, but also because of benign prostatic enlargement, inflammation or other, non-cancerous causes – and prostate cancer can also be present with a normal PSA value. PC-Alarm Focus looks at something else: it searches urine for traces of a genetic alteration – the TMPRSS2–ERG gene fusion – which, according to published studies, is not characteristic of benign prostate tissue. So if it finds a signal, that points to a narrower set of causes than a raised PSA value does. If it finds no signal, however, that does not rule out prostate cancer: not every tumour carries this alteration, and even when present it does not always reach urine. The test therefore does not replace PSA – it answers a different question.

PC-Alarm Focus looks for the trace of a genetic alteration characteristic of prostate tumours in urine. You collect the sample at home, discreetly; we provide the laboratory analysis and a report with an explanation. Collecting the sample needs no needle and no digital rectal examination - and no waiting list either.
We look for the trace of the TMPRSS2–ERG gene fusion characteristic of prostate tumours, in an accredited laboratory.

The trace of the gene fusion was not detectable. This does not rule out prostate cancer, because not every tumour carries the alteration.
A negative result is no reason to suspend an investigation already under way or to postpone planned examinations. Your treating physician decides on the next steps.
We found the signal of the TMPRSS2–ERG gene fusion in the sample. This is an alteration characteristic of prostate tumours.
Take the report to your urologist: the result warrants further investigation. A positive report is not in itself a diagnosis; establishing one is a specialist task, usually by tissue examination.

You collect a sample from the first part of the first morning urine into the tube supplied in the kit, up to the amount marked in the guide. The stabilising agent in the tube helps preserve the RNA to be analysed. Collecting the sample needs no appointment and no prostate massage, only careful adherence to the sampling guide.
You return the sample through a parcel locker, packaged as described in the guide. No refrigeration is needed; keep the sample at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight. Post it so that it reaches the laboratory within 7 days of collection.
